Luther Quotes—Reformation Day – John 8:31–36
“Regardless of how terrified the Christian is by the Law and how much he acknowledges his sin, he does not despair; for he believes in Christ into whom he has been baptized and through whom he has the forgiveness of sins. Now if our sin has been forgiven through Christ Himself … we have become free by the deliverance of the Son.” LW 26:447
Here is how Luther himself explained its meaning:
First, there is a black cross in a heart that remains its natural color. This is to remind me that it is faith in the Crucified One that saves us. Anyone who believes from the heart will be justified (Romans 10:10). It is a black cross, which mortifies and causes pain, but it leaves the heart its natural color. It doesn’t destroy nature, that is to say, it does not kill us but keeps us alive, for the just shall live by faith in the Crucified One (Romans 1:17). The heart should stand in the middle of a white rose. This is to show that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace—it puts the believer into a white, joyous rose. Faith does not give peace and joy like the world gives (John 14:27). This is why the rose must be white, not red. White is the color of the spirits and angels (cf. Matthew 28:3; John 20:12). This rose should stand in a sky-blue field, symbolizing that a joyful spirit and faith is a beginning of heavenly, future joy, which begins now, but is grasped in hope, not yet fully revealed. Around the field of blue is a golden ring to symbolize that blessedness in heaven lasts forever and has no end. Heavenly blessedness is exquisite, beyond all joy and better than any possessions, just as gold is the most valuable and precious metal.

Adult Bible Study This Morning
THE PRIESTHOOD OF ALL BELIEVERS was one of the teachings of the Reformation which had a great impact on the church. It is based in large part on 1 Peter 2. During adult Bible study today we will look at that verse and other Scriptures that deal with the office of the public ministry and how it relates to the Christian church as a whole.
Future Options for Bible Study
What would make the Sunday Bible study time more meaningful and encourage participation? Pastor Bob would appreciate your thoughts on that question. May we learn from one another in many ways.
Just Words is a new Bible study which meets in the Upper Room during education hour. The Gospel is more than words. It is the dynamic, saving action of God in Christ Jesus through any of its various forms: Word or Sacrament. The Gospel is more than words, but it is still words–words about the Word made flesh for us, words that convey the Word made flesh to us.
Just Words explains the language used by the Bible’s writers to describe and convey what it is that God has done for us in Christ. It helps the reader see the wonderful variety, rich texture, and clear doctrine with which God communicates His Good News. It is an excellent source of information about the way God has made His Word relevant to us. Cliff Richardson will be the discussion leader and the book Just Words by Jacob Preus is provided. The study will begin September 29. See Cliff or Mike for a book.
We continue our study “So the Next Generation Will Know” by Sean McDowell and J. Warner Wallace. This next generation, quite literally, has the potential to change the world. If you’re raising, grandparenting, mentoring or teaching Generation Z, the study, backed by the latest research with great ideas for activities and teaching is for you. You are invited to join us at 7:30 am for some Bible study, conversation and a cup of coffee. There is room for you around the table.
