Join Pastor’s study of Luther’s Small Catechism
Is this class for you? Certainly!
Join us for a study of the Small Catechism, Wednesdays, September 5-October 24, 7 pm – 8:15 pm.
Maybe your initial thought is, “I already went through catechism instruction—that was years ago.” Well, yes, that was years ago. You may have been a great student, but that does not mean you remember everything. You also might have questions today that you did not have then. If you would like to order the Small Catechism, there is a sheet in the narthex next to pastor’s Sign-up for class.
Tomorrow is the day that copies of the new edition of the Small Catechism will be ordered. A sample copy is in the back of the church along with the sign-up sheet.
Monday Night Worship
Is your summer hectic? Are you finding yourself rushing here and there with plans every weekend? Join us on Monday nights at 7:00 for a chance to catch your breath and remind yourself what is really important – worshipping God.
The St. Paul survey to support our Transition Thinking is available online as well as on paper. For the online version, go to: tinyurl.com/saintpaulhamburg . If this doesn’t work, the full address is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S8MWHPW . Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
The surveys of the congregation asking for shared memories and thoughts for the future are being returned in the offering and/or dropped off at the office. Thanks! We would like as many responses as possible. Please fill them out by September 16. Extra copies are in the back of the church.
Do you have a picture that could be part of a slide show highlighting the history of St. Paul? It might be an activity, a personal event, or the building under construction. If you have one, please scan it and submit it. Or we could scan it for you. Just bring it to the church office. Based on the pictures submitted, we may have a couple of slide shows from different eras of St. Paul that will be shared in October. They need to be received by September 23 to be included.
2018 Bible Sale
Whether you need a new bible, would like to get a study bible or other study book, or even purchase as a gift, this is a great time to do it. Up to 30% off. Sign up. There is an insert in your bulletin. However, they did not leave room for your name and number, so please provide that either on the back or a sticky note.
St. Paul Ministry Fair
During our Education Hour on Sunday, September 9, all ministries of St. Paul will have the opportunity to share who they are, what they do, and provide ways for others to get involved. Please consider a poster, display board, or other avenue to highlight each ministry at St. Paul.
Education Hour – 9:45 am-10:45 am Sunday
Plan to join us during the Education Hour this week. We provide opportunities for people of all ages to read and inwardly digest the true promises of God revealed in the Bible.
Summer Sunday School
The biblical account “Jesus Gives the Lord’s Supper” serves as the focus for Sunday School today. Participants will learn that Jesus gives His true body and blood in the Lord’s Supper. Consider discussing the lesson further: “Why is it important that Jesus established the Lord’s Supper? What benefits do we receive through the Lord’s Supper?” Come and join us this summer!
Sunday School Kick-off
All ages will kick off a new year of ministries on Sunday, September 9, during the Education Hour. The morning will include a cross+generational event that includes a lesson and discussion. Ministries of St. Paul will be highlighted during the morning as part of this kick-off event, celebrating a new year of growing in Christ!
Sunday Morning Bible Study
Rev. Dr. Scott Yakimow is leading this study with the remainder of the topic “Islam.”
Sunday’s Readings Bible Study
Every Sunday we hear three Bible readings in the Divine Service. These Bible readings reflect the current church calendar and usually serve as the basis for the sermon. This Bible study helps them come to life. This class meets in the main part of the Large Fellowship Hall.
Would you like to share faith in Jesus in a way that makes sense? This study will provide simple tools that encourage listeners to think for themselves about brokenness in the world and a plan for creation that makes sense. With words and pictures the plan of God is revealed. Come, listen, respond, act. Fresh Brew meets on Sunday mornings at 7:30 am in the Large Fellowship Hall.
Monday Women’s Bible Study
We will not meet tomorrow, Monday, Aug 20. Both Pastor Riggs and Mike Hausch will be involved with Confirmation Instruction. We will meet next on Monday, August 27. We gather on Mondays at 11:00 am.
Men’s Saturday Morning Bible Study
Men enjoy a healthy breakfast. We have been working on a new study titled, “Discipleship Explored.” The study is based on Paul’s letter to the brothers and sisters in Philippi, and we have just begun. It is a great time to join this group. We meet Saturday mornings at 8:30 am. See you next Saturday, August 25.
Confirmation classes begin this week! Parents and students are required to attend an orientation meeting today, August 19, at 12:15 pm – right after the 11:00 am worship service. Kids’ Connection During the 11 am Divine Service
This is a time for 3-year-olds through 2nd-grade students during the 11:00 am Divine Service. This week we will look at the story “A Dream of Heaven” found in Revelation. Children leave for Kids’ Connection after the children’s message and return when the offering is received so that they may participate in a blessing at Holy Communion as well as the close of the worship service.
Blessing of the Backpacks
All ages are invited to bring their backpacks to worship on Sunday, August 26, for a special backpack blessing to kick off the new school year. All students, teachers, librarians, administrators, and other school workers are invited to participate in this special blessing as part of the worship service.
This year’s fall festival will be on Sunday, September 9 from 12pm-3 pm. Please refer to the bulletin insert for more information.

Open Shop Days
Daisy’s Food Pantry offers open shop days every Wednesday between 1pm-4pm. Our food pantry helps households in our community bridge out of crisis. Families can shop 6 times a year in our pantry. No qualifications or appointments are needed. Please spread the word so we can reach more people in our community. Our current needs are oil, mustard, spaghetti sauce and boxed skillet meals.
Don’t miss your last chance to schedule your photography session! If you haven’t made your appointment yet, TODAY is the last day to stop in the Fellowship Hall before or after church. You can still contact Cindy Elowsky (810) 231-3851 or email@example.com this week to make your appointment. The link for making your appointment online has been disabled. Next weekend, August 25-26 is the last scheduled photography days.
We would also like to take pictures of groups such as Ushers, Greeters, Altar Guild, Audio/Visual Team, Church Council, Sunday School Teachers, Confirmation Prayer Partners, Food Pantry staff, Choir and Praise band, Old Timers, gardeners, and any other group that would like to be included. August 25 would be a good day, since there are many appointments still available, but you are free to make an appointment for any other open time slot. If these days don’t work, let us know and we’ll work something out.
In Our Community
Michigan District Events
This fall the Michigan District is hosting a number of events. Please review the following list and, where applicable, share them with your staff, lay leaders, and members.
Crossroads, formerly known as A2E Urban Institute, will take place on September 16-17. This conference provides principles, practices, and preventive measures and further informs and equips individuals, leaders, and ministries to respond creatively and intentionally to pain. There will be valuable information and training for all who want to make an eternal kingdom impact.
On September 22, Rev. Dennis Heiden will share stories and lessons learned from an experience born out of desperation. Instead of getting mad at the large, intimidating church and grumbling about the ‘sheep stealer’ up the road, his small church stepped through its fears and asked questions that became a conversation and grew into a partnership.
