LENT Midweek Dramas and Simple Supper

Volunteers are needed to be actors in a series of dramas that will help lead the congregation to see the work of Christ. “Cross Examination” begins February 29 at 7pm and there is also a simple supper at 6pm.

SPRING ADULT INSTRUCTION CLASS

NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER for the Spring Adult Instruction Class if you are interested in becoming a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Church membership is certainly not about a name and picture in a pictorial directory. Belonging to a church is joining to a community of believers where you will confidently hear the comfort of the good news of Jesus and see the sacraments faithfully administered according to the commands of Christ.

Please encourage your friends and family to join our congregation and attend our spring adult instruction class. The book we use is called Lutheran 101. This book is engaging and it effectively bridges the gap between intellectual knowledge and practical application of God’s Word. My goal for this class is to lead the participants into a relationship with Jesus that is built on the truth of God’s Word.

The spring classes will meet on Thursday nights March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 6-8pm with a meal provided and free childcare available upon request. Let Pastor Gaertner know that you plan to come so he can order the books and get the proper number of meals prepared. KIDS’ CONNECTION is a time for 3-year-olds through 2nd grade students to connect after the Children’s Message. Children will participate in the first part of the worship service, head to Kids’ Connection, then return to the Divine Service when the offering is received so that they may participate in a blessing at Holy Communion as well as the close of the service.

BIBLE STUDIES

FRESH BREW BIBLE STUDY meets at 7:30 a.m. “The Lutheran Difference: Priesthood and Ministry.”

SUNDAY EDUCATION HOUR – 9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m.

SUNDAY SCHOOL at St. Paul Lutheran Church is a wonderful environment for children to grow in their faith alongside their friends. Children are connected to God’s Word and get to the heart of each Bible teaching. Crafts and games give students a hands-on way to highlight the Bible story message. Bring your children, 3-years-old through 6^th grade, down to the basement classrooms for an hour of Bible stories, songs, crafts, and fun.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL On this Transfiguration Sunday, students study the story of “The Transfiguration.” In the Transfiguration, we see Jesus as the pure and holy Son of God, whose perfect righteousness is given to us through God’s Word and Sacraments. Parents could ask, “What did Jesus reveal to His disciples about Himself in the Transfiguration? What does God’s Word reveal to us about Jesus?”

ADULT STUDY OPTIONS @ EDUCATION HOUR

ROAMING THROUGH THE BIBLE we help each other understand what God is saying to us. Each week is a complete unit. We meet in the lower level in Sunday School Room 4. This discussion is led by Ted Richardson. Everyone is welcome.

MISSIONS – A Bible study by Rev. Tony Boos. In the Large Fellowship Hall for a study that looks at what motivates and empowers the Church.

MONDAY WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY begins a new study on the book of “Acts”. We continue our study in Acts 2. Join us at tomorrow or any Monday at 11:00 am. We meet in the Fellowship Hall. .

MEN OF INTEGRITY, Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Connect with guys that aren’t afraid to be Christians. Rolls, donuts, coffee, and juice are provided.

THURSDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY GROUP will finish the spiritual warfare study by meeting after the Wednesday evening service.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY Martha Wohlfeil is getting a new couch, and she has invited the women of the community to her home to sit on it while Christi Gaertner leads a women’s Bible study on Monday February 27, Monday March 5, and Monday March 12. Bible study begins at 7:00 p.m. and will end at 8:00 p.m. The theme of our study is Adoption and the relationship we have with the Father as his adopted children. BUILDING IN THE PROMISE

Next Sunday, February 26, after the 11am worship service, there will be a meeting of the voting membership of the congregation. This meeting will update the congregation on the progress towards Building in the Promise.

WIN-SOME WOMEN LADIES RETREAT – This spring, women from around Michigan will gather at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island for a series of 2-day retreats aimed at discovering Christ’s MAJESTY. FELLOWSHIP FOR YOUNG FAMILIES hits the pool! Join us on Saturday, March 10 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. as we head to the Hartland Aquatic Center at Hartland High School. This is not your ordinary high school pool. Enjoy zero entry pool with sprayers and slides for little ones, a lazy river, a water slide, and a hot tub for adults. Cost is $5 per person. Children under 3 are free. No need to RSVP.

DAISY’S PANTRY

If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. Leviticus 25:35.

Because of the generous support of St. Stephens, St. Paul, Gleaners, and Krogers, we continue to support families struggling in Livingston County. During the month of January a total of 3,365 pounds of food was donated or purchased, and Daisy’s Pantry was able to distribute 2,281 pounds of food and other necessities to 19 families (74 individuals).

If you know of someone who is in need of food, have them call Love INC (517) 552-3620. The pantry is open on Wednesdays from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. by appointment through Love INC. If you are a member of St. Paul, you may call Arlene Wiltse to set up an appointment.

Pantry needs at this time include crackers, mustard, mayo/Miracle Whip, boxed potatoes, and spices. All items may be placed in the cart now located by the pantry door. We no longer need egg cartons.

YOU CAN HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Are you looking for a 3-4 hour commitment, once a week in assisting families during their time of distress? The office of Love In the Name of Christ, Love INC, is in need of morning and afternoon volunteers to answer the phones from 9:30-12:30, or 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. COFFEEHOUSE - a time for friendship, fun and feasting on physical and spiritual food Sunday evenings for 7-12 grade students, 5:00 – 6:15 p.m.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

CONFIRMATION CLASS will meet tonight, February 19. Parents and students are required to attend for both 1^st and 2^nd Year classes. Rev. Tony Boos will be presenting to the 2^nd year class how they are gifted by God to share their faith in Jesus Christ. The whole congregation is invited to this confirmation class presentation by Rev. Boos.

BASKETS OF PROMISE: A gathering of school supplies begins next Sunday. Through the Lenten season we will gather school supplies to fill a simple school bag for children of need identified through Lutheran World Relief. A bulletin insert is included in today’s bulletin listing those items and samples are in the church entrance. Items are identified by the week but you may bring any items at any time. Bags will be packed on Sunday, April 1.

BRIDGING THE GAP between Church and the Sexually Broken. Faith, Troy will host a two-night seminar with Dan Hitz, director of Reconciliation Ministries, on recovery from sexual brokenness. COMPASSIONATE CARE

MOST MINISTIRIES SUMMER MISSION TRIP

Consider making a difference with your summer vacation this year and join MOST Ministries on an eyeglass clinic mission trip.

There is already one person from St. Paul going on this trip and other people on the team are from Saline. I know that the people of St. Paul will help anyone from this congregation raise the funds to make this trip a real possibility. Dates: June 15-23, 2012

Location: Las Pacayas, Guatemala

Estimated Cost: $2100-2300 with estimated airfare

Cost Includes: International airfare, ground transportation, housing, meals, logistical, spiritual & cultural training materials, a trained team leader, in-country arrangements and costs, supplemental health insurance, crisis management plan, team medical bag with nursing protocols, and a 24/7 on-call doctor.

Purpose: Using a very simple testing system created specifically for MOST Ministries, this team will test vision and distribute eyeglasses to those in need. During the daily clinics, team members will test patients’ eyes and then fit them with the appropriate corrective lenses. Depending on the number of team members, a team can serve 100-300 people daily.

Eyeglass training is provided by the team leader and is completed in three to four hours during one of the team meetings. If team members cannot attend the meeting, a training CD and manual are provided for individual instruction. When the team arrives on the mission field, a final hands-on training is provided.

In order to minister to the spiritual needs of patients, each eyeglass clinic includes a witnessing station unless it is prohibited by the host country. At the witnessing station, the Gospel message and information about the home church is shared by the local missionaries, national pastors, or lay ministers. Team members are always welcome to work at the witness station or to share Christ’s love with the patients as they come through the clinic.

ELE’S PLACE is a healing center for grieving children that was launched in Ann Arbor in May 2007. We provide compassionate support groups for grieving children ages 3-18 and their parent(s) or guardian(s). Through creative activities, we help children share their feelings and memories with others their age who have experienced a similar loss, helping them learn to cope and begin to heal. The miracle of healing the paralytic confirms that Jesus, the Son of Man, has authority on earth to forgive sins and it confirms what the Son of Man chiefly came to do: deliver us and all believers from sin, death, and the power of the devil. Consider discussing, “In addition to healing the paralyzed man, what else does Jesus tell him? How has Jesus healed us from our sickness of sin?”

HOLY HUDDLE is a time for 7-12 grade students to find how God’s Word continues to speak in their lives and how they have been called by God for His holy purposes. Holy Huddle meets in the Activity Center (the house to the east of the main church building). This Sunday we will participate in the pre-event Bible study for Youth Quake.

Cost Includes: International Airfare, Ground Transportation, Housing, Meals, Logistical, Spiritual & Cultural Training Materials, Trained Team Leader, In-country Arrangements and Costs, Supplemental Health Insurance, Crisis Management Plan, Team Medical Bag with Nursing Protocols, 24/7 On Call Doctor.

In order to minister to the spiritual needs of patients, each eyeglass clinic includes a witnessing station unless it is prohibited by the host country. At the witnessing station, the Gospel message and information about the home church is shared by the local missionaries, national pastors or lay ministers. Team members are always welcome to work at the witness station or to share Christ’s love with the patients as they come through the clinic.

DAISY’S PANTRY

If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. Leviticus 25:35.

If you know of someone who is in need of food, have them call Love INC (517) 552-3620. The pantry is open on Wednesdays from 2:00 – 6:00 pm. by appointment through Love INC. If you are a member of St. Paul, you may call Arlene Wiltse to set up an appointment.

Pantry needs at this time include crackers, mustard, mayo/Miracle Whip, boxed potatoes, and spices. All items may be placed in the cart now located by the pantry door. We no longer need egg cartons.

YOUTH

COFFEEHOUSE - a time friendship, fun and feasting on physical and spiritual food Sunday evenings for 7-12 grade students, 5:00 – 6:15 pm. Coffeehouse will not meet this Sunday – instead the Superbowl Party.

SUPERBOWL PARTY this evening! It is being hosted by the Morris family (2585 Swarthout Road, Pinckney) for Confirmation and High School students. The party begins at 6:00 pm. Those wanting to carpool meet at church at 5:45 pm.

BIBLE STUDIES

FRESH BREW BIBLE STUDY meets at 7:30 a.m. and begins a new study, “The Lutheran Difference: Priesthood and Ministry.” This study is designed to equip the participants to talk to non-Lutherans about Baptism and Priesthood, the Priesthood at Worship, Priesthood at Work, office of the Holy Ministry, Qualities and Tasks, and Call and Ordination.

SUNDAY EDUCATION HOUR – 9:45am-10:45am

SUNDAY SCHOOL at St. Paul Lutheran Church is a wonderful environment for children to grow in their faith alongside their friends. Children are connected to God’s Word and get to the heart of each Bible teaching. Crafts and games give students a hands-on way to highlight the Bible story message. Bring your children 3-years-old through 6^th grade down to the basement classrooms for an hour of Bible stories, songs, crafts, and fun.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL students learn the story “Jesus and the Children.”(Mark 10:13-16) God, in His love sent Jesus to show how disobedient children can receive welcome into the family of God through the forgiveness found in Jesus. Consider discussing how members of your family can regularly experience the love of God found in Jesus your Savior?

HOLY HUDDLE is a time for 7-12 grade students to find how God’s Word continues to speak in their lives and how they have been called by God for His holy purposes. Holy Huddle meets in the Activity Center (the house to the east of the main church building). Next Sunday we will participate in the pre-event Bible study for Youth Quake.

NEW FACILITATORS APPOINTED Stacy Prince has been appointed to serve on the Board of Governors. Jack Stewart will serve in the ministry of Facilities and Vince Falzone will serve in the ministry of Outreach. These leaders were appointed by the Board of Governors and Leadership Team. The constitution of St. Paul requires that their names be announced to the congregation for four weeks in various publications. Please pray for Stacy, Jack and Vince as they begin their ministry in these positions.

The facilitator positions for the ministries of Fellowship and Volunteer Ministry are still open. If you are interested in one of these positions, please contact a member of the Board of Governors (Roger Rochowiak, Deb Taylor, Chris Mowers, or Stacy Prince).

FELLOWSHIP

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, FELLOWSHIP FOR YOUNG FAMILIES will meet at BounceU (301 Appian Way in Brighton) from 6:30 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. The cost is $8 per child. All children must wear socks and must submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. We do have scholarships available. DAISY’S PANTRY

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men. Ephesians 6:7

Service has indeed been evident through the sharing of time and resources. As we venture into 2012, the funding for Daisy’s pantry is secure due to the many monetary donations, the Robert Lehman memorial designation, a $2,000 grant from Gleaners, St. Stephens support, and even a Kroger gift card donated by a member. Weekly Kroger donations, Gleaners donations, public food drive gifts, and the numerous member food donations have the shelves stocked well. During 2011, a total of 684 volunteer hours went into maintaining the pantry. Through Daisy’s Pantry, 277 families received 23,878 pounds of food and other necessities. Countless hours were also put into maintaining St. Paul’s garden. This is indeed wholehearted service to the Lord.

During the month of December a total of 4,052 pounds of food was donated or purchased. Daisy’s Pantry was able to distribute 3,005 pounds of food and other necessities to 29 families (83 individuals).

EMPTY BOWLS 3^rd fundraising dinner to help feed the hungry in the South Lyon school district. 5-8 p.m., Feb. 1 at Millennium Middle School. South Lyon students created bowls, which will be sold to generate funds for Active Faith. Soup will be served. Cost: $10 for adults; $5 for kids 5-18, and $25 for families of four. Kids under five are free.

Winter Retreat – Divine Service

St. Paul Lutheran Church has a youth confirmation program that focues on building young people up in their baptismal promises. Mike and I, along with the parents, look to equip these young people to live daily in the promise that they are children of God by the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. We recently held our winter retreat at Somerset Beach Campground. The retreat focused on celebrating the Divine Service. We didn’t talk so much about when to kneel or stand or bow or other logistics. We talked about how the Holy Spirit delivers the good gifts of God’s promises through the Word of God and the Sacraments. We talked about how our worship services are not primarliy focused on what we do for God. We come to the worship service because God has promised to deliver the good gift of forgiveness of sins, life and salvation through His Word and His holy acts of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. You might notice that sometimes we call the worship service the Divine Service.

Confirmation and Early Communion

This year I began the process of changing at St. Paul the connection between youth confirmation and the Lord’s Supper. In the past a young person began to receive the Lord’s Supper after they had been confirmed. What we changed this year is providing an option for early communion. This option is not age or grade specific but is an option for parents when they believe their child is ready to receive the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner. When that time of readiness is near, the parents attend a three week class on the core pieces of information to teach their children to prepare them to receive the Lord’ Supper in a worthy manner. After the third session I provide a checklist that helps guide the conversation between parents and child. The parents in their homes instruct their children on how to examine themselves and see their need for forgiveness and then to trust that this forgiveness that they need is offered by God in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. When the parents believe the child is ready they come and talk to me and I talk to the child.

Last week I began these parents classes. After the parents attend these three sessions, they will go to their homes and have conversations with their children about what it means to confess our sins. After discussing confession of sin and absolution, the parents then will talk about how Jesus Christ is our savior and we receive the good gift of forgiveness of sins in the body and blood of Jesus found in, with, and under the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper. We receive the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner when we have faith in these words, “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” These words of Jesus do not require us to be a certain age, height, or to have spent a defined amount of time in a classroom. These words require a believing heart that trusts forgiveness is found in the body and blood of Jesus Christ received in the Lord’s Supper.

Our youth confirmation program remains a two year program with the Rite of Confirmation on the first Sunday in May. Our youth confirmation program still covers the Lord’s Supper and following the Rite of Confirmation the youth that did being early communion will be prepared to receive the Lord’s Supper. The main focus of our confirmation program is to equip these baptized children of God to live int he promises of their baptism. The early communion option does not replace confirmation.

SPRING ADULT INSTRUCTION CLASS

At St. Paul Lutheran Church we desire to connect people to Jesus. I don’t believe that you have to be a member of this congregation to have a relationship with Jesus. I do believe that as a member of this congregation your relationship with Jesus with be nourished. I also believe that all followers of Jesus should seek to join with other Christians for strength and encouragement. You will be nourished, strengthened, and encouraged at this congregation through the Word of God and the sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Church membership is certainly not about a name and picture in a pictorial directory. Belonging to a church is joining a community of believers where you will confidently hear the comfort of the good news of Jesus and see the sacraments faithfully administered according to the commands of Christ.

The spring classes will meet on Thursday nights March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 6-8pm with a meal provided and free childcare available upon request.

OUTREACH

LCMS MINISTRY TO THE ARMED FORCES

Today, LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces supports a total of 208 chaplains. Among these chaplains, 67 are active duty LCMS chaplains and 83 are serving Reserve and National Guard units. Currently, 4 of these Reserve/Guard chaplains are mobilized and serving at sea or in Afghanistan or Kuwait. LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces also supports 25 Veterans Administration chaplains, 29 Civil Air Patrol and four chaplains for the Federal Bureau of Prison ministry.

Our active duty members usually work on a base or post, with a large support staff to care for their needs, such as financial counseling, babysitting, health care, etc. However, our reserve community and their families are often located large distances from those support structures. Our hope is that our LCMS congregations can reach out to these families, especially when their loved ones are deployed, and help care for many of their needs.

LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces initiated Operation Barnabas in 2007 as a response to the ever-increasing needs of returning servicemen and women. The program’s goal is to equip and encourage LCMS congregations and their members, as well as local Operation Barnabas district counselors, for compassionate care and Gospel-sharing outreach.

GAS TO GO – We applied for a $1000 grant from Love In the Name of Christ to help start this new gap ministry called Gas to Go. The $1000 we received from Love INC is being matched by $1000 from the Daisy’s Food Pantry Restricted Fund. In 2012 we will have $2000 to support this transportation gap ministry. The ministry will be supported by volunteers coordinated by Nancy Emery. Individuals will be referred to the Gas to Go program through Love INC. The volunteers from St. Paul will meet these individuals at local gas stations and pump gas for the clients. During the time the volunteer is pumping gas for the client, the volunteer will be able to encourage the client and offer to pray with him or her. If financial support increases for this program we will also distribute LETS tokens. If you are interested in supporting Gas to Go, please make your donation to St. Paul Lutheran Church and write in the memo line “Gas to Go.”

KIDS’ CONNECTION is a time for 3 year olds-2nd grade children to participate in the first part of the worship service and after the Children’s Message they are go to Kids’ Connection. Children return to the Divine Service when the offering is received so that they may participate in a blessing at Holy Communion and the close of the service.

SUNDAY SCHOOL at St. Paul Lutheran Church is a wonderful environment for children to grow in their faith alongside their friends. TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL The Baptism and temptation of Jesus serve as the lesson focus for Sunday School this week(Mark 1:1-13). Jesus is baptized into and takes on our sin, and faces our temptations so we, in Baptism, would receive His goodness, His holiness, and His purity. Parents could ask, “Why is it important that Jesus was baptized? Why is it important that we are baptized?”

HOLY HUDDLE is a time for grade 7-12 students to find how God’s Word continues to speak to their lives and how they have been called by God to His holy purposes. Holy Huddle meets in the Activity Center (the house to the east of the main church building)

FIRST COMMUNION INSTRUCTION CLASS FOR PARENTS SCHEDULED

There is not a specific age or grade requirement for participation in this class. We are not approaching preparation for the Lord’s Supper from a standpoint of a child having reached a certain age or having sufficient seat time in a class.

SPRING ADULT INSTRUCTION CLASS

At St. Paul Lutheran Church we desire to connect people to Jesus. I don’t believe that you have to be a member of this congregation to have a relationship with Jesus. I do believe that as a member of this congregation your relationship with Jesus with be nourished. I also believe that all followers of Jesus should seek to join with other Christians for strength and encouragement. Finally you will be nourished, strengthened, and encouraged at this congregation through the Word of God and the sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Church membership is certainly not about a name and picture in a pictorial directory. Belonging to a church is joining to a community of believers where you will confidently hear the comfort of the good news of Jesus and see the sacraments faithfully administered according to the commands of Christ.

The spring classes will meet on Thursday nights March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 6-8pm with a meal provided and free childcare available upon request.

LEADERSHIP

VOTERS MEETING at 12:15pm on January 15. The agenda for this meeting is full of items that highlight our desire to connect people to Jesus.

The Board of Governors are the only elected positions in our congregation and they are responsible for making salary recommendations, resolving conflicts within the congregation, and evaluating the goals and achievements of the congregation as implemented by the Leadership Team. Stacy Prince has been nominated to the office of governor. There will be the opportunity to vote on her nomination at the January 15 Voters’ meeting.

The voting membership of the congregation will approve the 2012 budget and determine where 2011 local mission dollars are sent.

Also at this January meeting the Facility Improvement Team (FIT) will present their recommendations for a 3 phase master plan that will include a new family center with a gym, a new sanctuary and education wing. The FIT team will make a presentation that will highlight the case for why this master plan provides the opportunity for our congregation to continue connecting people to Jesus.

The concept drawings from the architect are very exciting and show the potential for our congregation to use our facilities wisely in reaching our community with the good news of Jesus.

DAISY’S PANTRY

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men. Ephesians 6:7

Service has indeed been evident through the sharing of time and resources. As we venture into 2012 the funding for Daisy’s pantry is secure because of the many monetary donations, the Robert Lehman memorial designation, a $2,000 grant from Gleaners, St. Stephens support, and even a Kroger gift card donated by a member. Weekly Kroger donations, Gleaners donations, public food drive gifts, and the numerous member food donations have the shelves stocked well also. During 2011, a total of 684 volunteer hours went into maintaining the pantry, and 277 families received 23,878 pounds of food and other necessities. Countless hours were also put into maintaining St. Paul’s garden. This is indeed wholehearted service to the Lord.

During the month of December a total of 4,052 pounds of food was donated or purchased, and Daisy’s Pantry was able to distribute 3,005 pounds of food and other necessities to 29 families (83 individuals).

Pantry needs at this time include crackers, mayo/Miracle Whip, boxed potatoes, and spices. All items may be placed in the cart now located by the pantry door. We no longer need egg cartons.

GAS TO GO – We applied for a $1000 grant from Love In the Name of Christ to help start this new gap ministry called Gas to Go. The $1000 we received from Love INC is being matched by $1000 from the Daisy’s Food Pantry Restricted Fund. In 2012 we will have $2000 to support this transportation gap ministry. The ministry will be supported by volunteers coordinated by Nancy Emery. Individuals will be referred to the Gas to Go program by Love INC. The volunteers from St. Paul will meet these individuals at local gas stations and pump gas for the clients. During the time the volunteer is pumping gas for the client, the volunteer will be able to encourage the client and offer to pray with him or her. If financial support increases for this program we will also distribute LETS tokens. If you are interested in supporting Gas to Go, please make your donation to St. Paul Lutheran Church and write in the memo line “Gas to Go.”

MATCHING FUNDS – Thanks to a donation from a generous family, St. Paul Lutheran Church is offering a $15,000 matching grant that will help our congregation invigorate ministries that have been curtailed because of past concerns about insufficient resources. Gifts given through December 31, 2011 that are designated as “matching funds” will be matched until we reach a combined total of $30,000.

Matching fund giving is intended to be over-and-above your faithful, planned, purposeful, and proportionate giving. God has been faithful in giving people in our congregation many blessings; now is an opportunity for us to invigorate new and expanding ministries at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Jesus reminds us that we will always have the poor among us. We will indeed be feeding those less fortunate during this difficult economic time because of the generosity of those who care and want to make a difference in our community. It is with gratitude that Daisy’s pantry has received memorials given in memory of Robert Lehman (Daisy’s husband/Janet Simpson’s father), generous donations from St. Stephens, St. Paul members and the community. In December we were also the recipients of the Lakeland Elementary food drive (1,288 pounds of food). Kroger continues to be a generous food contributor as well. During the month of November a total of 2,198 pounds of food was donated or purchased, and Daisy’s Pantry was able to distribute 2,739 pounds of food and other necessities to 30 families (85 individuals).

First Communion Class for Parents

January 18, 25 and February 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Previously, communion preparation for young people in our congregation occurred as the last unit in our young adult confirmation program. In the fall of 2011 I introduced a method for young people in our congregation to prepare for reception of Holy Communion. I am glad to report that the classes for parents to prepare their children in the home to receive the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner have been scheduled. In early 2012 there will be a three session workshop for parents on January 18, 25, and February 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Following attendance at this workshop, the head of the household will instruct his/her children on how to receive the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner. When the parents and the child believe the child is ready, they will talk to the pastor and then be welcomed to the Lord’s Supper.

In the past, the last unit of confirmation was about the Lord’s Supper, and now the last unit of confirmation will be broken into two parts. First, we will still cover the material of the Small Catechism concerning Holy Communion. The second part will be on Apologetics (defending the faith).

Now I would like to review the changes for first communion preparation that I wrote about in September. Our practice at St. Paul Lutheran Church will be as follows:

Baptized children are admitted to the Sacrament of the Altar prior to Confirmation with the blessing, approval and support of their parents after they have learned the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and received careful instruction in the Gospel and Sacraments. Like all who are invited to come to the Lord’s Table, they will confess their sin, their trust in their Savior, their desire to receive the Lord’s Supper for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of their faith in Christ, and their love toward others.

There will not be a set age or grade level that a child will need to reach to be admitted to the Sacrament of the Altar. The judgment of readiness will not be based on seat time in a class or having reached a certain age. Readiness will be determined by the parents and pastor after the child has learned the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and received careful instruction in the Gospel and Sacraments.

The Small Catechism, written by Martin Luther, begins each chief part with the words “As the head of the household should teach them/it in a simple way to his household.” This introduction expects the head of the household to instruct the members of his home in the basics of the Christian faith. In the history of the Lutheran Church it would seem that the pastor has assumed this task from the father. Through our support of parents in Faith Stepping Stones we have been supporting the role of the home in raising children to fear, love and trust in God above all things. It is time we bring this recognition to the task of preparation for reception of the Lord’s Supper.

Beginning this year the preparation to receive the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner will take place in the home with the support of the pastor. The pastor will teach a three-week course for the parents. This course will equip the parents to teach their children in the home the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Gospel and the Sacraments. When the parents feel their child is prepared to receive the Sacrament in a worthy manner, they will present their child to the pastor for entrance to the Sacrament of the Altar. When there are no parents or adults in a home to provide spiritual leadership, the congregation will step into that void to ensure that the child will be equipped to receive the Lord’s Supper.
