Christian Education

Education Hour – 9:45am-10:45am Sunday
Sunday School
Our Sunday School for preschool – 6th grade meets in the multi-purpose room downstairs beginning at 9:45am.

Rally Day – September 17
Rally Day, also known as Education Sunday, is the launch of a new school year exploring God’s Word. It is the launch of the start of all opportunities of growth! Exploring God’s Word is for all ages, from birth to death. A baby learns the rhythm of the service by sitting on mom or dad’s lap. A young child learns the Bible stories through repetition at VBS, Sunday School, church, and a children’s Bible. Older children and youth take those foundational stories and experiences and begin to question, challenge, engage, and experience the presence of God in new and exciting ways. Young adults, parents, single adults, middle aged adults, older adults…each stage allows an opportunity to look at those Biblical stories through fresh eyes and new experiences. Even those stories we thought we knew inside and out, reveal new insight through different life events.

All ages are welcome to join us as we launch the start of another year of all opportunities of growth on Sunday, September 17! Come and see what we’re up to at St. Paul this year!

Am I really needed?
We have a great year planned for Sunday school, but few teachers. We need you as a partner in ministry! If you like kids, can read a lesson plan with minimal lesson planning, and desire to see all ages growing in faith through our education hour, consider joining our team. We would like to find a preschool assistant, and a few other teachers. We will start the year with the materials used in the past, but will switch to a VBS type of Sunday School where students explore workshops to dive deep into the Bible story. Options include: Art, Bible Skills and Games, Computer Lab, Cooking, Creative Drama, Music, Science, and Video. Regular classes will begin after Rally Day, September 17.

A teacher training will be held on Sunday, September 10 at 12 pm and resources will be distributed. Watch for details on the training event. If you are able to help, please contact miriam@st.paulhamburg.com. Thanks!

There are two Faith Milestone Events handouts available in the narthex to help kick off the new school year. They can also be found on the church website (http://stpaulhamburg.com/). Faith Milestones Ministry uses special times in a child’s life to acknowledge and affirm God’s presence in their midst. Milestone Moments provide a model for connecting significant occasions in people’s lives with their ongoing journey of faith. There are two handouts to choose from: a Back to School Milestone (for children and youth who have been in school) and a Beginning School Milestone (for those children starting school for the first time).

Today in the Sunday School
In His Word, God commands that we should be content with what we have. The Bible account “Ahab Covets Naboth’s Vineyard” demonstrates the sad consequences of covetousness. God provides all we truly need in this life. Consider discussing, “How does God give us what we need every day? How can you learn to be satisfied with what you have?”

Holy Huddle – Beginning a New Year
We gather at 9:45am in the Activity Center, which is the house east of the main church building. This class is for 7th-8th graders and youth confirmation students.

High School Study “Christians Under Construction”
Kathy Kless and Sue Trotter, lead this combined discussion and study. We meet in Sunday school room #5 during the 9:45am Bible Study time. Just because confirmation is completed, it does not mean your learning is done. Come and take the opportunity to continue learning about Jesus and the Bible at our relaxed Christians Under Construction group. As a group, suggest topics and Teen Topics to focus on and see how the Holy Spirit helps the same Old and New Testament Bible stories take on new meaning at different stages of your life!

Sundays Readings Bible Study
Every Sunday we hear three Bible readings in the Divine Service. These Bible readings reflect the current church calendar and usually serve as the basis for the sermon. This Bible study helps them come to life.

Pastor Bible Study “A Man Named Martin Part 1: The Man”
Pastor Gaertner leads a Lutheran Hour Ministry Bible study that introduces Martin Luther which provides us a chance to find Christ-centered endurance.

Kids’ Connection
This is a time for 3-year-olds through 2nd grade students at the 11am Divine Service. This week we will learn that

“Nehemiah Rebuilds the Wall” found in Nehemiah 2:11-6:19. Children leave for Kids’ Connection after the children’s message and return when the offering is received so that they may participate in a blessing at Holy Communion as well as the close of the worship service.

Fresh Brew Bible Study
This study does not meet on September 3, but it will renew drinking from the fresh brew of coffee on September 10. Pastor Gaertner continues a Bible study on the Formula of Concord. This Bible study meets on Sunday morning at 7:30am.

Monday Women’s Bible Study
We will not meet, Monday, September 4. We will gather again on Monday, September 11 and continue our study “Waiting: A Bible Study on Patience, Hope and Trust.” The lesson title will be, “Esther: When Waiting Doesn’t Mean Doing Nothing.”

Men’s Saturday Morning Bible Study
Men, we will not meet on Saturday, September 9, many of us will attend the retreat at Camp Arcadia. We will next meet on Saturday, September 16. We will have a healthy breakfast and a thoughtful and challenging discussion on the book Loved and Sent by Jeff Cloeter. This group meets Saturday mornings at 8:30 am.

Family Ministry

Blessing of the Backpacks – A Faith Milestone Blessing
All students (preschool-college) are invited to bring school backpacks to worship on next Sunday, September 10, for our special blessing of the school year. Parents/students will be asked to participate in a special blessing.

Beginning and Going Back to School Milestone Moments
There are two Faith Milestone Events handouts available in the narthex to help kick off the new school year. They can also be found on the church website (http://stpaulhamburg.com/). Fellowship

St. Paul Hamburg Fall Fest
We hope you will plan on joining St. Paul Hamburg’s Annual Fall Fest on Sunday September 17 following the 11am service at 12 noon. This is an opportunity to enjoy fellowship with your church family as well as to share the welcoming love Jesus has to offer with the local community.

We will have fun activities for the kiddos (and some adults), a fall-themed meal of chili and other fixings and sides to fill your tummy. Christian music will be played over the speakers as well as from our great VBS band. And don’t forget you can enter to win a raffle basket or door prize!

We can’t make this event great without all the volunteers who are so generous with their time and talents. If you would like to help out in some way, you can check out http://tinyurl.com/stpaulfall2017 to sign up for a shift of your choosing. Or contact Becky Gusoff via cell/text 734-673-0546 or beckygusoff@hotmail.com.

If you don’t have the time but still want to help, you can sign up to donate a door prize or make something for the dessert table and drop it off ahead of time.

Flyers and postcards will be in the narthex for you to give to your friends, family, and neighbors. Or share the Facebook event that can be found on the St. Paul Facebook page.

In the past, we have asked for donations of gently used stuffed animals for our Fall Festival. This year we have plenty so please donate your stuffed animals to other charities.
